Yet Another Study Finds Abortion Mental Illness Link

Filed under: News — Editor @ 2:11 pm

A new study by researchers at the University of Manitoba concludes that post-abortive women are four times more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol as women who carried their pregnancies to term.  The study joins numerous others in rebutting the claim of abortion providers that abortion addresses the mental health concerns of women.

The study, authored by Margaret Burnett, Jitender Sareen and Natilie Mota and published in the April 2010 issue of the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, also found a link between abortion and other mental health disease including mood disorders.

These results confirm earlier studies including a 2008 study by Priscilla Coleman, Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at Bowling Green State University.  You can read more about the 2008 study here.

These studies and the conclusions of Dr. Paul McHugh directly rebut the claims by the late Dr. George Tiller that mental health concerns justified his performance of late-term abortions.  You can read more about Dr. Tiller’s claims here and view an interview of Dr. McHugh’s about Dr. Tiller here.

The most recent study concludes that post-abortive women:

  • have a 98% increased risk of mental health issues;
  • have a 59% increase in suicidal thoughts;
  • have a 61% increase in mood disorders;
  • have a 261% increase in alcohol abuse; and
  • have a 280% increase in substance abuse.*
